This gripping, high-voltage psychological thriller returns readers to the dark, addictive world introduced in The Housemaid, delivering an even more explosive story of secrets, manipulation, and vengeance. Packed with relentless suspense, morally complex characters, and jaw-dropping twists, this sequel proves that some doors should never be opened—and some secrets can never stay buried. The warning is clear from the start: “Don’t go in the guest bedroom.” Douglas Garrick’s voice lowers as he touches the door, his expression shadowed by something that feels far more sinister than concern. He explains that his wife is very ill, secluded behind that closed door in their lavish penthouse apartment overlooking the city. It should be a simple request. A reasonable boundary. But for the woman he’s just hired, it sparks an unease she can’t quite shake. The narrator desperately needs this job. With a past she must keep hidden at all costs, she’s learned that survival depends on staying quiet, obedient, and invisible. Employers who don’t ask questions are rare, and the Garricks—wealthy, polished, and surprisingly trusting—offer her exactly what she needs. A steady income. A luxurious place to work. And a chance to lie low until she can secure her future. At first, the job feels almost perfect. She cleans the immaculate penthouse, prepares elaborate meals in the gleaming kitchen, and admires the breathtaking city views. Douglas is polite, if distant. Controlled. Watchful. But one thing is missing: Mrs. Garrick herself. Days turn into weeks, and the mysterious woman behind the locked guest bedroom door remains unseen. Then the unsettling details begin to emerge. Late at night, the narrator is certain she hears sobbing—muffled cries seeping through the walls. While doing laundry, she notices faint spots of blood staining the neckline of pristine white nightgowns. Douglas offers vague explanations, brushing off concerns with practiced calm. But the fear in his eyes tells a different story. Curiosity battles with self-preservation. The narrator knows better than to get involved. She knows how dangerous it can be to pry, to ask questions, to care. Yet the signs of suffering grow harder to ignore. When she finally knocks on the forbidden door and it swings open, what she discovers inside shatters everything she thought she knew. Behind that door is not just a sick woman—but a horrifying truth. In that moment, the narrator makes a promise. She has survived darkness before. She knows how monsters think. And she will not walk away this time. She will protect Mrs. Garrick—even if it means unleashing the parts of herself she’s tried so hard to bury. But Douglas Garrick is not the man he pretends to be. Beneath his refined exterior lies cruelty, control, and a history of unforgivable wrongs. He believes he holds all the power. He believes his secrets are safe. He is wrong. As the narrator carefully plots her next move, the novel transforms into a deadly game of cat and mouse. Every action is calculated. Every lie serves a purpose. The narrator must stay one step ahead, balancing her desire for justice with the risk of exposing her own past. Because if Douglas discovers who she really is—or what she’s capable of—she may not survive long enough to save anyone. What makes this story so compelling is its razor-sharp exploration of power dynamics, abuse, and the masks people wear to hide their true selves. The penthouse, with its stunning views and polished surfaces, becomes a chilling symbol of appearances versus reality. Wealth and respectability conceal horrors that thrive behind closed doors. As the tension escalates, the twists come faster and darker. Loyalties blur. Motivations are questioned. And just when readers think they understand who is in control, the story takes another shocking turn. The narrator’s past and present collide in devastating ways, leading to a climax that is both deeply unsettling and wildly satisfying. This sequel raises the stakes higher than ever, proving that survival sometimes requires becoming just as dangerous as the people you’re fighting. With its fast-paced chapters, unforgettable protagonist, and morally twisted choices, the novel keeps readers turning pages late into the night. Fans of Gone Girl, The Woman in the Window, and The Perfect Marriage will be utterly hooked by this dark, addictive thriller. Though it can be enjoyed as a standalone, readers familiar with The Housemaid will find this installment even more chilling, as it deepens the psychological tension and delivers a story that lingers long after the final page....

About the Book

This gripping, high-voltage psychological thriller returns readers to the dark, addictive world introduced in The Housemaid, delivering an even more explosive story of secrets, manipulation, and vengeance. Packed with relentless suspense, morally complex characters, and jaw-dropping twists, this sequel proves that some doors should never be opened—and some secrets can never stay buried.

The warning is clear from the start: “Don’t go in the guest bedroom.”
Douglas Garrick’s voice lowers as he touches the door, his expression shadowed by something that feels far more sinister than concern.

This explosive & shockingly twisted sequel to international bestseller, #TheHousemaid, kept me turning the pages quickly to reach the end! Frieda keeps the suspense thriving again in another intense situation Millie finds herself in. I loved getting to visit Millie again. She’s a favorite character of mine and no matter what she may be forced to do, I adore her. And her story isn’t done…..

Great read. There was of course a twist that made my mouth drop, lol! But this is why I am a Freida fan for life! I am running to the novella, The Housemaid’s Wedding.

I just came across Freida McFaddens in August. This was the first book of hers I read, then I got “The Housemaid” (I read them in the wrong order) and I loved it. I was given a mystery novel (of another author) in July and then I have read 4 of Freida’s books since! AND I MUST CONFESS that these 5 books are the only novels I have ever read. I am 61 and didn’t ever think I would like to read. (My short attention span) Now I can’t put Freida’s books down!!! Things keep changing that I didn’t expect! It was fun and exciting! I am now hooked on reading! I’m starting “The Inmate” now. I know it will be another great mystery novel.

  5. TG

I read the Housemaid, going on completely bling on what that book was about. It’s not my usual genre, but like to try new things and get different perspectives. After finishing the first book, I was in awe of McFadden”s writing style. When this book was released, being the second in the trilogy, I had to buy it right away. Like the first, this book made my heart beat fast out of fear and curiosity. If I had a heart condition, I might have exploded with suspense. Even if this isn’t your regular style/choice of topic/genre, this will not disappoint. Excellent all around, and both these books keep you thinking you might know what’s really going on, but you don’t til it ends. That’s when you can finally let out a breath, deep and reflect on how insanely good this series is.

  1. Angelina Antonizio

Going into this book, I was concerned that it would not live up to the first one in the series. The first half of Part I was a little slower/dragged a bit, but I am so grateful that I powered through, because the twists and turns that followed were INSANE. Every time I thought I had figured the story out, new information unearthed, and I quickly realized that I had no idea what was coming up until the final pages. I’ve seen conflicting opinions on whether the first book is better than this one or not, but I feel as though I can confidently say that the shock factor and uncertainty of “The Housemaid’s Secret” has to be a winner for me. Once again, another 5-star book for Freida McFadden!

  2. Brittany R.

Truthfully I expected a different beginning from how the last book left off so it was a slow start but by the end I ended up liking this book more than the first one. Lots of unexpected twists while still keeping authentic character development. On to book 3!

I LOVE this book in the Housemaid series!! Book 1 was a bit better ngl but book 2 still scores a 9/10 on my end! I recommend!

  4. Jess Harman (store manager)

I couldn’t put this book down! The Housemaid’s Secret grabs you from the first few pages and keeps the suspense building all the way through. Freida McFadden does a great job of throwing in just enough clues to keep you guessing, but still manages to surprise you with every twist. The pacing is perfect—short chapters, quick scenes, and no dull moments. I flew through it in a couple of sittings. The main character is easy to root for, and even though some of the situations are wild, they’re written in a way that makes you want to see how it all plays out. If you enjoy psychological thrillers with secrets, lies, and jaw-dropping reveals, this one is a must-read. I’d definitely recommend it to fans of The Housemaid or anyone who loves a good binge-worthy thriller.

  5. Catique

I just devoured ‘The Housemaid’s Secret’ by Freida McFadden and I’m still reeling! This book is a masterclass in psychological suspense, with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t put it down – once I started reading, I was hooked until the very end. McFadden’s writing is impeccable, weaving a complex web of secrets and lies that will keep you guessing until the very end. If you’re a fan of domestic thrillers, you won’t want to miss this one. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

  6. Ann M Schreiber

So, I didn’t like this book as much as the first book (The Housemaid) as I feel like I missed something somewhere. I never got clarity on Douglas and if there was a different man involved. And that back door camera? I am not clear on what it saw and what it saw. That said, I am looking forward to the third in the series. And for those thinking of reading the series, I suggest listening on Audible as it is narrated by Lauryn Allma and that Brooklyn accident for Millie just seems to add a bit to the story. Happy reading!

  7. Faith

Love these books. I can’t wait to buy the other two 💜 My book is messed up! It’s not a big deal but I’d like for it to not have water marks on it 😭 It did come fast tho..
